Chapter Five

"Come," Varok called out in response to the chime announcing someone's presence at the door of his suite.

The door opened, and Zarthos walked in. Varok untangled himself from Morgan's arms and put on a loose robe to walk into the living area of the suite. "Zarthos. What brings you here so late?"

Zarthos sat and propped his feet up. "Now that you have had several days to become accustomed to base operations, I think it is time for you to take a more active role, Varok."

Varok ordered drinks from the replication slot and walked over, handing one to Zarthos before he took a seat. "What did you have in mind?"

"Our abduction operations have been handled rather sloppily of late. The last two missions netted less than a dozen specimens per mission. If we are to complete the weapons installation on the Viper and proceed with our plan, we must have more of the neurochemicals, not to mention the biological components necessary."

"And what is it that you wish me to do?" Varok asked.

"I want you to take charge of the operation. You will meet with the team leaders tomorrow morning and formulate a new strategy, then set up an accelerated schedule of operations."

"Very well. I must admit that the past few days of relative inactivity have begun to bore me."

Zarthos studied Varok for a moment. "Tell me, Varok, just what is it that you use to keep Adonia so tame and submissive. I know from experience that pain is not an incentive, and I cannot believe that mere physical pleasure would be enough motivation to make her so complaint with your every demand."

Varok smiled and looked around at the bedroom door for a second. "I told her that Eion and Sirena are alive and that if she wishes them to remain that way, she will do exactly what I tell her, or I will make her watch while they both die slow and agonizing deaths."

Zarthos laughed. "Very good, Varok."

"I thought so." Varok remarked smugly. "Adonia's weakness is the love she feels for family and friends. She would do anything to protect those she loves. Even sacrifice herself."

Zarthos' face hardened. "Did you know that I once had a son, Varok?"

Varok's smugness vanished. "Yes. Adonia told me that she bore you a son. Zithros, I believe, was his name. Where is he now?"

"Sazare destroyed him!" Zarthos hissed. "Like the coward, he has always been, he slithered in one evening undetected and took Adonia. That same evening Zithros was destroyed."

"And you are quite sure it was Sazare? I did not think he had the nerve to kill."

"Oh, yes." Zarthos hurled his glass across the room, watching it shatter against the wall. "It was Sazare. And he will pay for what he did to my son."

"Are you going to tell Adonia that Zithros is no longer among us?"

Zarthos snorted. "Why should I? She was nothing to Zithros except for a receptacle that housed him until birth and breasts that fed him. He cared nothing for her professions of love and philosophies of peace and brotherhood.
